James Timothy Daly is the youngest of four children of actors Mary Hope and James Daly; the actress Tyne Daly is his older sister. Daly went to The Putney School, where he developed an interest in acting and so studied it. He later attended Bennington College in Vermont and began his professional career while was there, graduating in 1979 with Bachelors degree in Theatre and Literature.
