He also wrestled in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling.

Steve is a Houston native, and after he finished high school, he enrolled at the University of Texas, where he played football and in his senior year earned first-team All-American honors. In 2010 he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
In 1989 he declared for the NFL Draft, and was selected by the New England Patriots as the 73rd pick overall. However, he spent only one season as a Patriot, and was then acquired by the Chicago Bears. Steve stayed with the Bears until 1993, helping them win the Super Bowl in 1985, and in the two following seasons, he earned Pro Bowl selections.
