In 1988 he won his first Wimbledon title, defeating Boris Becker in four sets; it was their first of three Wimbledon finals, Becker won the title the following year, while Stefan won it again in 1990, in five sets, and in that way the two became two of the greatest Wimbledon rivals. After his retirement, Stefan started playing squash, and also became a part of the Black Rock Tour of Champions, which is a tennis tour consisting of retired tennis players. He won a tournament held in Paris, defeating Sergei Bruguera in the finals.
