Newman attended South Bend La-Salle High School, and after his matriculation in 1996, he enrolled in Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, graduating in 2001 with a Bsc degree in vehicle structural engineering.
Newman started driving while still a small child, driving in his first quarter-midget race at the age of five, going on to capture over 100 victories, six regional and one national championship over the following seasons. After switching to full-sized midgets in the All-American Midget Series when he was 17, Newman earned the Rookie of the Year award and became a champion midget racer. His success earned him induction into the Quarter Midget Hall of Fame.
He began racing USAC sprint cars in 1995, eventually winning the USAC Silver Bullet Series title, the first driver to win all three midget, sprint and Silver Bullet.USAC divisions.
