Rusty made his race car driving debut in 1973 at Lake hill Speedway near Valley Park, Missouri. However, his best season was 1993, when he won the 1993 Food City 500 at Bristol Speedway, at the same time as his friend Alan Kulwicki died in a plane accident, so he dedicated the victory to him by doing Kulwicki’s trademark reverse “Polish Victory Lap”.
