During his younger years, Paulie spent most of his time in Syracuse, Sicily because his father was a professional football player there. They moved back to Brooklyn but their father eventually left the family to continue his career. Paulie didn’t like it when his mother remarried and he often got into fights with his stepfather. Eventually, he moved in with his grandparents, attending high school but getting into trouble a lot, such as street fights which caused his expulsion. Eventually he begged his grandfather to help him with a career in boxing, and he got his start.

Paulie went on a roll, winning his first 21 professional boxing fights before facing Miguel Cotto in 2006. After a gruelling battle, he was eventually handed the first loss of his career, but his net worth was steadily increasing. He returned in 2007 with a convincing victory against Edner Cherry, and later in the year won the IBF Light Welterweight Championship fighting Lovemore N’Dou. The fight was one-sided and Malignaggi dominated the match, earning him the Ring Magazine comeback of the year award for 2007. After winning another match against Ngoudjo in 2008, he went on to have a rematch against N’Dou, but was able to defend his title. By late-2008, Paulie would fight the Light Welterweight Champion Ricky Hatton where he would be thoroughly defeated; Malignaggi would later blame trainer Buddy Mcgirt for the loss. His next two fights would be against Juan Diaz for the vacant WBO NABO Light Welterweight title. In a controversial first match, Malignaggi would be defeated, but in late-2009, he came back with a convincing victory. His next and last fight in the junior welterweight division would be against Amir Khan, a fight he lost. His performance suffered as a result of the weight loss required for the division and he decided to shift to the Welterweight division.

Malignaggi would go on and win his first two matches in the Welterweight division, against Viacheslav Senchenko and Pablo Cesar Cano. He lost on a split decision on his 2013 match against Adrien Broner, and would then win via a unanimous decision against Zab Judah in late-2013. The next two fights would end in defeat, as he faced Shawn Porter and Danny Garcia, by TKOs with Paulie no longer able fight with the injuries he sustained. He won his next two fights and would win the vacant EBU-EU Welterweight title against Antonio Moscatiello.

For Paulie’s personal life, it is known that he is a fan of various sports and supports soccer, possibly as an ode to his father. He frequents his time visiting several cities of the United States and goes back to Sicily from time to time. Any relationships are kept strictly private.
