Pat Croce was born in a mixed marriage between an Italian father and Irish-American mother. He studied at the University of Pittsburgh and graduated in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences in 1977. Soon after, Croce started his career as a physical therapist, and later became a physical conditioning and rehabilitation coach for the NHL team Philadelphia Flyers. Croce served as an administrative director at the Sports Medicine Clinic of Haverford Community Hospital before was hired to help the Philadelphia 76ers centre Shawn Bradley to bulk up. He stayed with Philadelphia for the next ten years as their athletic trainer.
In 1984, Croce established the Sports Physical Therapists and expanded business to a chain of 40 centres in 11 states before sold it in 1993 for $40 million. In 1996, Croce became a president of the Philadelphia 76ers as a part of a group that also owns Philadelphia Flyers. Under his guidance, the 76ers went from the worst team in the league to the NBA finals in 2001 after which he resigned.
