Michael was brought up in a family of two sets of twins – he has a twin sister and two older twin sisters. Michael grew up listening to Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and other famous rock musicians, which was the music taste of his parents.

When he reached teen years, Michael started listening to such metal acts as Iron Maiden, Metallica, Iced Earth, then rock bands Whitesnake and Deep Purple among many others. When he was 17, Michael moved to Copenhagen where his professional music career began. He started the death metal band Dominus, and released four studio albums before the band dissolved in 2001. Michael himself decided to disband the group since he was tired of the death metal scene, and started writing songs that belonged in rock genres other than metal.

As a result, Michael formed Volbeat that now comprises Poulsen as singer and rhythm guitarist, Jon Larsen as a drummer, Rob Caggiano on guitar, and Kaspar Boye Larsen as a bass guitarist. Volbeat subsequently went through several line-up changes, and included musicians such as Anders Kjølholm, Teddy Vang, Franz “Hellboss” Gottschalk, and Thomas Bredahl. They recorded the demo tape “Beat the Meat”, and after selling 1,000 copies they were signed by the Rebel Monster Records, which is a sub-label of Mascot Records.

However, the band’s debut album didn’t come out until late 2005, when they released “The Strength/The Sound/The Songs”, which was pretty much successful in Michael’s native country, reaching No. 18 on the charts, and achieved double platinum status in the country, which increased his wealth to a large degree. He continued to produce music, and in 2007 released Volbeat’s first No.

1 album “Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil”, which achieved four times platinum status. The same year, Michael got to play with his teen idols, Metallica, at their concert in Denmark, while he also toured with Megadeth in Finland.

Volbeat’s third album, “Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood” came out in 2008, and topped the charts in Denmark and also in Finland, largely thanks to their earlier tour throughout Finland, and achieved triple platinum status in Michael’s native country, while their popularity expanded into other European countries, including Finland, where it reached gold status, then Germany and Sweden, in which the album also achieved gold status, increasing Michael’s net worth, and making Volbeat one of the rising stars of the rock scene. They continued in the same way with their fourth album, entitled “Beyond Hell/Above Heaven”, which became even more popular than its predecessor, achieving platinum status in Denmark, Germany and Austria, while it was certified gold in Sweden, Finland, and also the band broke into the US with gold certification. Volbeat has then toured Canada, and USA as well, appearing in some of the most prominent rock and metal festivals, including Orion Music Festival, among many others, all of which increased Michael’s net worth to a large degree.

Their next album came out in 2013, under the title “Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies”, which saw an increase in their popularity overseas, as it reached into the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart landing at No. 9, while it also topped the charts in Denmark, Austria, Germany, Norway and Switzerland. Most recently, Michael and his band released a sixth studio album – “Seal the Deal & Let’s Boogie” – becoming their most successful album to date commercially as it reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart, and topped charts in several countries.

Regarding his personal life, Michael was married to Lisa from 2010 to 2015, when the couple divorced. Michael had a very strong bond with his father who died in 2008, and at his funeral, Volbeat’s son, “Light a Way” was played. After his father’s death, Michael tattooed the names of his parents on his fingers.
