Mark O’Meara was born to parents Bob O’Meara, a furniture wholesaler, and Nelda O’Meara, a dedicated housewife, and actually grew up in Southern California, although during his youth, his family travelled a lot across the country because of his father’s work selling furniture. Mark actually learned golf from his mother, and borrowed a set of golf clubs from her at age 13. He used to sneak onto the Mission Viejo Country Club near their house to play golf, but he later on became an employee of the club, and also went on to play for his high school golf team. In college, he was an All-American at Cal Long Beach State, and won the US Amateur in 1979, as well as the California State Amateur Championship. Mark lived in the same neighborhood as Tiger Woods, and the two played a lot of golf growing up.
Mark turned professional after graduating in 1980 with a degree in marketing. He won the Greater Milwaukee Open in 1984, and went on to win 16 events on the PGA Tour, including winning the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in California a total of five times.
