At an early age Madison already played competitive tennis, and played mostly on the ITF tour. During this time she won a title in doubles competition as well as three titles in singles. In 2009, she made her first appearance as a part of the WTA Tour during the Ponte Vedra Beach Championships; she received a wildcard into the main draw and defeated Alla Kudryavteseva, before losing in the next round. Later in the year she played as a member of the Philadelphia Freedoms, and beat Serena Williams. In 2011, she got her first US Open spot, and would win the first round before getting eliminated. The following year, she then won another wildcard competition to join the Australian Open, but lost against Zheng Jie.

2013 marked the first time Keys reached the quarterfinals of a WTA event at the Apia International Sydney, but lost against Li Na. She participated at the Australian Open once more but was eliminated in the second round. She claimed her first top 10 win in the Mutua Madrid Open, but eventually lost against Medina Garrigues. She then reached the quarterfinals at the Aegon Classic before reaching her first WTA semifinal at the HP Open in Osaka which she lost against eventual champion Samantha Stosur. In 2014, she participated in numerous tournaments once more, and would eventually get her first title at a Premier event in Eastbourne, defeating Jelena Jankovic. She joined the Wimbledon Championships, but she was forced to drop out during the third round because of a leg injury. After a few tournaments, she became seeded for the first time at a Grand Slam at the US Open – she finished the season 31st in the world.

In 2015, Madison would perform better by reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open, then struggled in several tournaments but found form once again, eventually reaching the fourth round of the US Open where she lost against Serena Williams, but reached the top 20 rankings in the world, and the following year reached the top 10, defeating high ranking players and getting her second career title in the Aegon Classic, and reached her second Premier 5 final at the Rogers Cup. In 2017, she had to miss the Australian Open due to surgery, and her performance went up and down throughout the season, but she found form and won the Bank of the West Classic against Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza, then reached her first Grand Slam final at the US Open.

For her personal life, not much is known about Keys’ romantic relationships, not even any rumours. According to an interview, she liked tennis at first because of the white tennis dress worn by Venus Williams. Her parents are attorneys and she has three siblings.
