Lorena Ochoa is the third of four children of an artist and real estate developer parents, and grew up in Guadalajara. Lorena started playing gold at the age of five, and while a junior, she won 22 state tournaments in Guadalajara and an additional 44 around Mexico. The University of Arizona offered her a golf scholarship, and Ochoa accepted it to team up with a fellow golfer Natalie Gulbis.
Lorena won the NCAA Player of the Year Award in both 2001 and 2002, but failed to win the championship, and then she left the college to become a professional. Ochoa was named the LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 2003 following eight top ten finishes, while her first LPGA win came in May 2004 when she beat Wendy Ward at the Franklin American Mortgage Championship.
