Lloyd attended Petaluma High School and matriculated in 1930. Afterwards, he attended UCLA where he studied political science.

Bridges started his acting career in 1939, in a Broadway production of Shakespeare’s “Othello”. He joined the stock company which was part of Columbia Pictures which led to small roles, but then left the company to enlist in the US Coast Guard during World War II. After he was discharged, he returned to acting, though was still a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. He continued to support the Coast Guard, making several public announcements and he was eventually made an honorary commodore. His career was halted in the 1950s after he admitted that he had once been a member of Communist linked Actors’ Laboratory Theatre, but he was eventually cleared by the FBI and returned to acting, garnering considerable success.

He started earning high salaries after his performance in “The Alcoa Hour”, for which he received an Emmy Award nomination, leading him to more opportunities. Eventually, he was cast in the series “Sea Hunt” which continued to build his popularity, as it was shown in several other countries too. He then starred in “The Lloyd Bridges Show” which included appearances from his sons.

He was also a regular cast member in the western series “The Loner”, though he pulled out later due to violence in the show. Other projects he was a part of in the next few years included “San Francisco International Airport”, “Paper Dolls” and “Harts of the West”. Lloyd also appeared in several mini-series such as “The Blue and the Gray” and “Roots”, and earned another Emmy Award nomination for his role in “Seinfeld”. Later in his career, he portrayed Commander Cain in the original “Battlestar Galactica” television series, and was also a contract performer for Columbia Pictures, appearing in “Sahara”, “Little Big Horn” and “High Noon’.

For his personal life, it is known that Lloyd married Dorothy in 1938, and they remained together until his passing. They had four children, two of whom would become actors – Jeff Bridges and Beau Bridges. His grandson Jordan Bridges also went into an acting career. He did charity work during his free time, including working with organizations such as Heal the Bay and the American Oceans Campaign.

In 1998, Bridges passed away from natural causes. An episode of “Seinfeld” was later released in dedication to him. He was also posthumously awarded the Lone Sailor Award, which honors former Coast Guard servicemen who went on to have successful careers.
