Nemechek attended the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida, but his racing career started when he was 13 years old in motocross. By 20, he had won over 300 trophies, establishing a decent reputation and popularity. In 1986 he entered stock cars races, and went on to score wins in every series in which he participated. The following year he won the Southeastern Mini Stock Series, in 1988 captured the U.S.A.R. series and then the All Pro series in 1989, becoming All-Pro Late Model Rookie of the Year.
