Jeff was introduced to golf at an early age; he grew up on The Woodlands golf course in Texas. He went to McCullough High School, and after matriculation he enrolled at Texas A&M University. The fact that he was living near a golf course, it was only natural for Jeff to get golf clubs in his hands, which led to him being an All-American member of the golf team at the University. He became a professional golf player in 1986, firstly competing on the Ben Hogan Tour, which is now Web.com Tour. In 1990 he was named Player of the Year on the tour after winning two events, the Ben Hogan Knoxville Open, and Ben Hogan Buffalo Open. The following year he joined the PGA Tour, and ever since has been a constant member of the highest men’s professional golf tour in the USA. His first win on the tour came in 1993, when he was the best at the Walt Disney World/Oldsmobile Classic, which only increased his net worth, and had to wait for six years to win his second title, at the WGC-Andersen Consulting Match Play Championship. His third victory came at the FedEx St. Jude Classic, where he was better than Tom Pernice, Jr by three strokes, further increasing his wealth.

Apart from winning three events, Jeff has 15 second places on the PGA Tour, which also contributed to his wealth. In recent years, he joined the PGA Tour Champions, formerly known as the Senior PGA Tour, and has won four titles, which include two major championships, Regions Tradition and US Senior Open, both in 2015, which further increased his wealth. He also lifted the trophy at the Shaw Charity Classic and Dick’s Sporting Goods Open, also in 2015. Apart from competing in the USA, Jeff has won tournaments in Asia and Australia, including the Malaysian Open in 1989, and Vines Classic, Australia, among others.

Jeff has been a part of US National teams, winning the Presidents Cup in 1994, and Ryder Cup in 1999.

Regarding his personal life, Jeff has been married to Michelle Garrett since 2000; the couple has two children together. Previously, he was married to Kelli J. Hess, with whom he also has two children.
