Jay grew up in his hometown and attended Perkins High School. He matriculated in 1983 and then enrolled at Bowling Green State University, from where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Radio, Television, and Film four years later.
Soon after he obtained his degree, Jay found his first job at local Hazard, Kentucky TV station WYMT-TV. Then in 1993 he joined WBNS-TV in Columbus Ohio, as its sports director, and served in the position for the next five years, which not only increased his net worth, but also gained him highly needed experience for furthering his career. In 1998 he joined WFTS-TV based in Tampa, Florida, from where he joined ESPN.
