In 2016 Hinchcliffe returned to the Indy Car Series to Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, and through a third place in the race on the road course of Indianapolis, he scored the pole position for the Indianapolis 500. He finished the season in 13th place overall. In 2017, he again won at Long Beach, and had two more third place finishes, repeating his position in the first race of 2018.

Aside from racing, in 2016 James took part in season 23 of the TV series “Dancing with the Stars”, finishing second partnered with professional dancer Sharna Burgess. Later that year he appeared in an episode of “Celebrity Family Feud” featuring IndyCar drivers.
