Jamal Crawford spent his childhood in his hometown of Seattle, raised by a single mother as his father had left. He started playing basketball when he was only three years old, and later continued for the school team – the Rainier Beach Vikings – while attending Rainer Beach High School. He excelled there, as he led the team to win the WIAA State Championship in 1988, and thanks to that he was named to the Parade All American Team. Furthermore, he received a scholarship to the University of Michigan, where he continued to play college basketball.
