While playing as a junior he reached the No. 1 position in 1978, winning the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year. In 1980 he won seven titles, including in Barcelona, Spain, Basel, Switzerland, and Toronto, Canada, defeating such tennis stars as Björn Borg, and Guillermo Vilas in the finals.
