Ime Udoka grew up in a Nigerian-American family in Oregon; he went to Jefferson High School in Portland, where he started playing basketball in the small forward position, and he later studied at the University of San Francisco, but then transferred to Portland State University. Udoka played a pivotal role with the University’s Vikings and was one of the best players at the time, afterwards securing deals with Fargo-Moorhead Beez in 2000 and then with the Argentinian Independiente.
He came back to the United States in 2002 and spent some time with the North Charleston Lowgators and Adirondack Wildcats before the Los Angeles Lakers gave him a chance to play in the NBA.
