“Macho’s” parents separated when he was three, and he moved to New York with his mother. A troublesome child since his earliest days, Macho Camacho would constantly get into fights, cause trouble, and as a result he was eventually sent to jail when he was only fifteen years old. Fortunately one of his teacher’s tutored him to read and write, and introduced him to boxing and karate. Macho Camacho soon discovered his passion for boxing, and subsequently won three New York Golden Gloves Championships, before deciding to pursue a professional boxing career.
Camacho began his rise to fame by initially competing in the Super Featherweight division. He then advanced to the Lightweight division, where he had some of his more notable fights with Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard, both of which he won. Macho Camacho then competed against Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya, and won a fight against Raul Jorge Munoz. Macho fought and beat the best boxers around during his strongest, avoiding no-one until he went on hiatus due to legal issues. However, Macho is the only boxer recognised to have won seven championships, in the super featherweight (WBC, 1983), lightweight (WBC, 1985), and junior welterweight (WBO, 1989 and 1991) divisions. In 2011, Camacho was mixed-up in a shooting when he was attacked and shot at three times. Camacho, however, did not file a report. Later that same year, Macho Camacho was charged with child abuse for attacking his teenage son. He was released from jail on a $5,000 bail and was awaiting trial at the time of his death.
