In the autumn of 2012, Hincapie admitted to having used doping during his career until 2006. Together with another ten former team mates, Hincapie was charged by US Drug Administration, accepted a reduced suspension for six months and a disqualification in all races between 31st May 2004 and 31st July 2006.

Moreover, aside from racing George Hincapie is the owner of Richard’s 1998 sportswear company Hincapie Sports. The products have been manufactured in Medellin since 2003 by a company of his uncle Jorge. The company is the sponsor of the BMC Hincapie Sportswear Development Team founded in 2012.
