Eric is the son of Bill, who worked as a structural engineer and Sandy, who was a school teacher. He was raised in Southfield, Michigan, with his brother, Steven, who is now an accomplished attorney with headquarters in Michigan, and a sister, Jodi, who, just like her mother, works as a school teacher. Eric attended Southfield-Lathrup High School, and after matriculation in 1987 enrolled at the University of Michigan. After graduating with high honors in 1991, he continued at the University of Michigan Law School, from which he obtained a Juris Doctor degree in 1993.
However, Eric never practiced law; instead havinge started selling carpets while at the University, he then took his business to another level, borrowing family funds, and collaborating with college friend Brad Keywell to buy Brandon Appare, an clothing company ,in Madison.
Their next venture was foundingthe internet company Starbelly, which specialized in promotional products. Their new company grew rapidly and they sold it to Halo Industries, afor who Eric became chief operating officer. However, Halo was bankrupted in 2001, and the two companies faced numerous charges from shareholders, settled by 2004.
Still, Eric continued as an entrepreneur and in 2001 started InnerWorkings, which produced print procurement services for mid-sized companies, and operated with such success that it went public in 2006, which increased his net worth. He served on the board of directors of the InnerWorkings until 2012.
His career didn’t stop there, as he started several more companies, including Echo Global Logistics, which is a freight logistics company, then MediaBank, a media-buying technology company, which in 2012 merged with Donovan Data Systems to create Mediaocean. Furthermore, he started Lightbank, Groupon – an e-commerce marketplace, Uptake LLC – an analytics company, and most recently Tempus, all of which increased his net worth thanks to successful operations.
Thanks to his success as a businessman, Eric has been able to teach in several business schools in the Chicago area, including at Applied Technology at Kellstadt Graduate School of Business and at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, among other positions.
