Although born in London, Elyes grew up in Canada, but later returned to UK and lived in Manchester and Bristol. He is of mixed descent, and his ancestry includes Algerian, Spanish, French, Dutch, Irish, Anglo-Indian and Portuguese. As a youngster, he went to St. Damian’s Roman Catholic Science College, and later attended Strodes College, the Oldham Theatre Workshop and the Northern Kids Theatre Company.
