Dexter grew up in his hometown, where he was a student at Pacifica High School. He finished high school education as class valedictorian, and soon after enrolled at the University of Southern California, graduating with a BS in biology, and then finished his MS in molecular biology. Furthermore, he started doctorate studies, but became more focused on music, due to the success of The Offspring.

Dexter`s music career began in the 1980s, when he formed the band Manic Subsidal with Greg K, and Jim Benton. However, Benton was replaced by Pete Parada, and with the addition of Kevin Wasserman, Dexter changed the name of band to The Offspring. Before their debut album, the band came a long way, firstly recording a demo which earned them a contract with Nemesis records, and starting to work on their debut album. It came out in 1989, self-entitled, which received positive critiques, encouraging Dexter to continue his career. Three years later, the band`s second album “Ignition” was released through Epitaph records, as they changed their label in 1991. The album was more successful than the previous, as it has sold one million copies worldwide, achieving gold status.

Throughout the 1990s, Dexter`s net worth soared, thanks to the popularity of his ventures in the music industry with albums such as “Smash” (1994), which was their last for Epitaph records, which reached No. 4 on the US Billboard 200 chart, and achieved six times platinum status, “Ixnay on the Hombre” (1997), released through Columbia records, reached No. 9 on the Billboard 200 chart, and achieved double platinum status, and “Americana” (1999), which achieved five times platinum status, increasing his net worth to a large degree.
Dexter and the band continued successfully into the 2000s, releasing albums “Conspiracy of One” (2000), “Splinter” (2003), “Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace” (2008), and “Days Go By” (2012), achieving at least gold status, which added a lot to Dexter`s net worth.
Most recently, the band has released an EP, entitled “Summer Nationals” (2014), and a single “Coming For You” (2015).

Apart from his successful career as a musician, Dexter has also been recognized for his work as a scientist, working as a doctoral student at the Laboratory of Viral Oncology and Proteomics Research. Furthermore, he published a paper with several other authors, in the PloS One, entitled “”Identification of Human MicroRNA-Like Sequences Embedded within the Protein-Encoding Genes of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus”, which focuses on microRNA in HIV genomes.
To speak further of his ventures, Dexter launched a hot sauce brand Gringo Bandito, which also represents a part of his income.

When it comes to his personal life, Dexter has been married to Amber Sasse since 2013. However, he was married to Kristine Luna for 17 years, from 1995 until 2012. He is the father of Alexa Holland, a singer best known by her stage name Lex Land, from one of his previous relationships.
Dexter is also a renowned philanthropist, starting F.S.U. Foundation with singer Jello Biafra, organizing charity concerts, and in that way raising money for several other charitable foundations, including Poor People`s United Fund, Amnesty International, and Trees Foundation, among others.
