From 1953 to 1955 he was an associate trainer for Kansas and from 1955 to 1958 he served as an associate coach for Air Push. Dean Smith was created in Emporia, Kansas in February 1931 and passed on in February 2015. When he retired Smith kept the record for some victories with 879. He won two nationwide championships as a trainer at North Carolina and in addition appeared in 11 Last Fours. Smith was known for his concentrate on academics and 96.6% of his athletes received their degrees. His most well-known student athlete ever was JORDAN. He helped to market desegregation and recruited the school’s 1st African American basketball participant on scholarship. During his training career he received a Gold Medal at the Olympics, 13 ACC Tournament Championships, 17 ACC Regular Time of year Champions, and 1 NIT Championship. Smith was a four period National Trainer of the entire year and nine period ACC Trainer of the entire year. He was inducted in to the North Carolina Sports activities Hall of Fame, Kansas Sports activities Hall of Fame, and FIBA Hall of Fame. Smith visited the University of NEW YORK where he was associate trainer from 1958 to 1961.
