Villegas grew up in Medellin, along with his younger brother Manuel, also a professional golfer. He began playing golf in his childhood years and started to compete at the age of eight at various Colombian National Junior Championships. When he was 16, he won the Amateur’s Grand Slam: the National Junior Championship (match play), The National Junior Championship (stroke play), the National Amateur Championship, and the Colombian Open in the amateur category, all in the same year, becoming the first player in the history of Colombian golf to do so.
