Villegas grew up in Medellin, along with his younger brother Manuel, also a professional golfer. He began playing golf in his childhood years and started to compete at the age of eight at various Colombian National Junior Championships. When he was 16, he won the Amateur’s Grand Slam: the National Junior Championship (match play), The National Junior Championship (stroke play), the National Amateur Championship, and the Colombian Open in the amateur category, all in the same year, becoming the first player in the history of Colombian golf to do so. He was honored as Player of the Decade by the Colombian Golf Federation., especially after winning the Colombian Open as an amateur the following year. All contributed to his popularity, but not yet to his net worth because of his amateur status.

In 2001 he enrolled at the University of Florida in Gainesville on an athletic scholarship, from where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2004. While at college, he played golf for the Florida Gators team in the National Collegiate Athletics Association, being the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year, two-time Southeastern Conference Player of the Year and four-time All American. He also played in the amateur Eisenhower Trophy for Columbia in 1998, 200 and 2002.

Upon graduating in 2004, Villegas entered the PGA Tour, earning his Tour card in 2006. He went on to sign an endorsement deal with Red Bull, serving as their sole PGA Tour golf athlete ever since.
After impressive statistics in his rookie year, he made it to the 2007 Masters Tournament by finishing in the top 40 of the Official PGA Tour Money List for 2006. With a remarkable performance in the inaugural FedEx Cup play-off system, he entered the 2008 Masters Tournament and the the Tour Championship in Atlanta, Georgia, finishing in the top 10 for the third straight week and being in 24th spot on the FedEx Cup points list.

In 2007 Villegas won the Coca-Cola Tokai Classic on the Asian Golf Tour in Japan, earning over $208,000 which considerably increased his wealth. The following year he captured the win at the TELUS Skins Game in Canada, earning $230,000, further expanding his wealth. He also scored a record-breaking 65 at Birkdale in the second round in the 2008 British Open Championship, and went on to win his first PGA Tour later that year, taking the BMW Championship and finishing 18th in the Official World Golf Rankings. His popularity and his fortune were greatly boosted.

Another victory at The Tour Championship followed in 2008, putting Villegas in seventh spot in the Official World Golf Rankings, and making him the highest ranked golfer from South America, and at the end of the season, he was also the seventh player on the PGA Tour money list. His net worth was growing larger.

Later that year, Villegas entered the European Tour. Although he didn’t capture any victory in 2009, he kept the spot among the top-10 in the Official World Golf Rankings, then he captured his third victory on the PGA Tour in 2010, reinforcing his fame and increasing his fortune. After a winless period of four consecutive seasons, Villegas won the Wyndham Championship in 2014. He currently doesn’t have his Tour card and is playing the 2016–17 season with past champion status.

Internationally, he played in the Presidents Cup for the international team in 2009, and the World Cup for Columbia in 2006 and 2011.

When it comes to his private life, Villegas has been married to Maria Ochoa since 2014. Other details regarding his personal life are unknown to sources.
