Brian Roberts Net Worth $27 Million
Brian Michael Roberts is a son of Nancy and Mike Roberts, and grew up in North Carolina. When he was a five years old, Roberts underwent serious heart surgery to repair an atrial septal defect. His family lived in Chapel Hill where he went to the high school, and then started playing baseball at the University of North Carolina under his father Mike, who was a head coach at the time. In the first two years at college, Roberts emerged as one of the top prospects in the country, but opted to move to the University of South Carolina after his father was fired. During his college years, Roberts was dubbed as the nation’s best defensive player, and his future as a professional was quite bright.
The Baltimore Orioles drafted him in the first round of the 1999 MLB Draft, and as usual he played in development leagues before he debuted in the world’s best league; Roberts spent two seasons with the Delmarva Shorebirds of the Class A South Atlantic League and Gulf Coast League Orioles. He also had brief spells with the Rochester Red Wings and Ottawa Lynx, but finally got his chance to perform on the big stage in 2001, and appeared in 75 games for the Orioles. In his sophomore year, Brian played in only 38 games, spending most of the time with Baltimore affiliate in Rochester.
In 2003, Roberts hit his first professional Grand Slam against the Anaheim Angels, and finished the season with 23 stolen bases out of 29 attempts in 112 games. Jerry Hairston Jr. was his biggest opponent for the starting spot in the team and was ahead of Roberts in the depth chart during his first three years with the Orioles. However, after Hairston fractured his finger and was sidelined at the beginning of 2004, Roberts took the opportunity and became a starter. Roberts finished the 2004 season strongly with 175 hits in 159 games.
The following year Baltimore traded Hairston Jr., leaving Roberts as the top choice for the second baseman position. Brian exploded that year and earned his first invitation to the All-Star game. He dislocated his shoulder later that year, but returned with force in 2006, and secured his place at the All-Star game in 2007. Roberts stayed with the Orioles until 2013, but a series of concussions led Baltimore to make the decision not to re-sign him for another season.
The New York Yankees offered him a one-year contract worth $2 million that could reach the figure of $4.6 million with clauses, which only increased further his net worth. Roberts only played 91 games for the Yankees, recording five home runs and seven stolen bases before they released him in August 2014, and Roberts retired in October after admitting that he didn’t think he was capable of performing at a high level anymore.
Regarding his personal life, Brian Roberts married Diana Chiafair in 2009, and they have a son named Jax Isaac born in August 2013.
