Brendan attended the All Saints Catholic Primary School in Ballymena, then went on to St Patrick’s College. As a teenager, Rodgers was on the football team of Northern Ireland, playing in a game against Brazil in 1988 and representing the Republic of Ireland at a schoolboy level. Brendan’s career began at Ballymena United in 1987, where he played as a defender. In 1990 he signed a contract with English club Reading, and became their reserve player.
