Edwards grew up in Detroit, along with his brother. When he was four years old, his parents divorced, but by the age of five he had met many of his father’s teammates, and expressed a strong interest in becoming a professional football player one day, and at 12 he began to train with his father.

Edwards attended Detroit’s Bishop Gallagher High School, where he played in various positions, making 63 receptions for 740 yards and eight touchdowns during his three years with the team. In 2001 he enrolled at the University of Michigan, joining the Michigan Wolverines team under coach Lloyd Carr. Setting several school records from 2001 to 2004, Edwards was awarded the Fred Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s best receiver, the Chicago Tribune Silver Football as the Big Ten Conference’s most valuable player, and was named a unanimous first-team All-American. He is the only player in Big Ten history and the third in NCAA Division I-A to gain at least 1,000 receiving yards in three consecutive years. Aside from playing football at Michigan, Edwards also ran track and field, his indoor 200 meter time being 21.81 seconds, the third fastest in Michigan’s history.

In 2005 Edwards was selected in the first round as the third overall pick by the Cleveland Browns in the NFL Draft. In his rookie season he gained 512 receiving yards and three touchdowns, but then suffered a knee injury. After recovering, he went on to amass 61 receptions for 884 yards and six touchdowns in the next season. In 2007, which is considered Edwards’ best season, he went to the Pro Bowl, the first Browns receiver to do so since Webster Slaughter in 1989, breaking franchise records for receiving yardage with 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns. His career with the Browns has enabled Edwards to rise to fame and to amass a significant net worth.

In 2009 he was traded to the New York Jets. During his two quite productive seasons with the team, he helped the Jets in consecutive trips to the AFC title game.

In 2011 Edwards signed a one-year contract worth $1 million with the San Francisco 49ers, considerably lifting his wealth, however, as he failed to achieve a 90-catch or Pro Bowl season, the team released him several months later.

The following year Edwards signed a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks, gaining only eight catches for 74 yards and one touchdown during the season.

In 2013 he signed a one-year deal with the Jets, but was waived by the team only a month later. He is currently a free agent.

In his private life, Edward has fathered two children with two different women – a fashion blogger Ashton Whittington, and “America’s Next Top Model” contestant Nik Pace. He later began dating Victoria Row, with whom sources believe he is still in a relationship.

Edwards has often been featured in the media, mostly concerning legal issues. Reportedly, he has been pulled over by the authorities for speeding violations several times, and has once been arrested on a DUI charge. He has been accused of physical violence as well, for punching a party promoter in the face, and for physically assaulting a photographer who made a video of Edwards fighting with an unknown man. Additionally, he has also been sued for child support for both of his children.

On the other hand, the player has been involved in philanthropy. Through his Braylon Edwards Foundation and its program called Advance 100, he awarded $10,000 college scholarships to 100 Cleveland students in 2011, fulfilling a promise he made in 2007.
