During college, he became a member of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps, and after graduating served in the US Air Force, working as a public information officer at Travis Air Force Base. After being honorably discharged, he worked as a reporter for Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and even travelled to Vietnam in the early ’60s to profile soldiers. For his personal life, it is known that Bob married Patricia Penrose in 1967, and they have two children. His younger brother is Tom Schieffer, who’s been named numerous times as US Ambassador to several countries. Bob is also a survivor of stage III bladder cancer, but has been cancer free since 2004. He also has type-2 diabetes which need regularly treatment.
