Right after matriculation, he received scholarships from several colleges, but decided to enroll at the University of Arkansas, from which he graduated with a BA degree in Business in 1960; while there, he played football for the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Upon graduation, he briefly served in the US Army, after which he returned to college, and then began to pursue his career in the sports industry as an assistant coach. Thus, his professional coaching career began in 1961. Five years later, after the 1966 season, he moved to the University of Oklahoma where he became offensive line coach.
