Trout grew up in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where he attended Mayfield High School. He began to train for boxing in a local gym when he was ten years old, and by the age of 19, he had compiled a 163-42-1 amateur record, becoming the US National Amateur Welterweight Champion at 147 pounds, and the runner-up to make the 2004 US Olympic Boxing Team.
The following year he turned pro, defeating Justo Almazan by a third-round TKO. He went on to win his first 26 fights at a professional level, and in 2009, he won against Taronze Washington, earning the vacant WBC Continental Americas Light Middleweight title.
